Descripción :	La consulta externa de Gastronutrición del Instituto Nacional de Pediatría durante el año 2007 recibió a mas de 2400 pacientes, que son los reportados en las hojas diarias de los médicos del servicio, siendo seguramente aún más los citados y probablemente los atendidos por el servicio durante el mencionado periodo del año 2007. Conocer los diagnósticos más frecuentes en el servicio de gastroenterología y nutrición, así como los tiempos de espera para obtener el diagnóstico definitivo, entre otras cosas es muy importante, dado que se pueden mejorar estas situaciones y brindar así una mejor atención al paciente. Estos datos no se encuentran publicados ni reportados en el hospital. En nuestro servicio se atienden patologías de gran importancia social por su prevalencia como son, la desnutrición y la obesidad. De la desnutrición, el INEGI en 2006 reportó una prevalencia que va desde el 2% antes de los 6 meses de edad hasta un 12.7% entre los 12 y 23 meses, lo que significa que la prevalencia aumenta según la edad, por lo que es necesario que nuestra institución reciba a estos pacientes a edad temprana y que nosotros implementemos medidas adecuadas para poder disminuir sus complicaciones, ya que no solo la repercusión es en el peso, sino en el desarrollo intelectual de los niños y la predisposición a enfermedades infecciosas entre otras. Así mismo se sabe que las intervenciones nutricionales que se pueden realizar para disminuir esta enfermedad deben de ser lo más oportuno posible.
