Descripción : This study investigated the effects of Fresomega® (fish oil) and citicholine (cytidine-5′-diphosphocholine; aka. citicoline) on lipid peroxidation (TBARS), glutathione (GSH) levels, and Na+K +ATPase and total ATPase activity in the brain of young rats fed a normal or a protein-deficient diet. Male Wistar rats (21 days old) were fed a normal diet (well-nourished, WN) or a low-protein (7 %) diet (malnourished, MN) and grouped as follows: group I animals (controls) were treated with 0.9 % NaCl; group II with Fresomega® (250 mg/kg), and group III with citicholine (500 mg/kg). Fresomega® and citicholine were administered intraperitoneally (ip) for 30 days. At the end of the study, animals were sacrificed by decapitation and the brain homogenized to measure Na+K+ATPase, total ATPase and TBARS levels by spectrophotometry, while GSH levels were measured by fluorometry. The Hb, Na+K+ ATPase, total ATPase, lipid peroxidation and GSH levels significantly increased (p< 0.05) in all the protein-deficient diet groups compared with normal diet groups. Our results suggest that protein-deficient intake increases oxidative stress but that supplementation with neither Fresomega® nor citicholine at the doses tested can reverse these effects.
