| Descripción : | Background: Malnutrition is a public health problem in Mexican children; nevertheless it has decreased white obesity has increased in the last decade. Objective: To determine weight excess or deficit in children from Mexico City. Methods: A descriptive, prospective, cross-sectional study of 796 children between 13 and 120 months. Excess or deficit weight percentages were presented using Z scores for weight-for-height (WHZ) and body mass index (BMI). Two or more standard deviations (SD) from the 50 th percentile were used as cutoff points. Results: 52.2% (females). Using WHZ, a 1.4% prevalence of malnutrition; overweight and obesity 7.8%. 27.2% overweight or obese by BMI. The prevalence of obesity distributed by age was: 7.1% for 13-24 month old children, 8.4% for 25-72 months and 9.3% for 73-120 months. Conclusions: There is a substantial proportion of children who are overweight or obese, especially in the 73-120 month age group. The WHZ seems to underestimate the diagnosis of obesity.
